Energy Efficiency Programs A 'Must Have' For New Home Buyers
Appear in: San Diego Business Journal, May 2001, VOL. 22, NO. 21
With the increasing cost of utility bills, savvy buyers are now including energy efficiency programs on their list of “must haves.” Wise buyers want granite countertops, location AND low utility bills. ComfortWise can help them realize the low utility bills.
ComfortWise is an energy efficiency program for new home construction. Builders opt to engage the ComfortWise program in their communities because they are rewarded with expressed buyer satisfaction and increased profits. (Although the program costs the builder more money up front, as a result they experience fewer callbacks, increased referrals, marketing and sales support, and the builder is recognized as doing something good for the environment.) The buyer gets lower utility bills, a more comfortable house, and the assurance of quality construction.
ConSol, energy consultants since 1981 and creator of the program, analyzes each model to qualify them for ComfortWise. A mechanical engineer designs the most efficient heating and air conditioning system for each model. Full energy code documentation is included. Tight ductwork (less than 6 percent leakage) and spectrally selective glass are installed. Third party inspections and diagnostic testing ensure the energy features are installed per protocols. Homes in the ComfortWise program are 30 percent more efficient than standards set by the National Model Energy Code, and they qualify for the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR Homes program. ConSol is nationally known and provides energy expertise beyond Title 24 and MEC compliance.
