ConSol Hosts US Department of Energy Team

Appear in: ConSol Press Release - July 2005

STOCKTON, CA—(July 28, 2005)—The Building Industry Research Alliance (BIRA) team, led by Stockton-based ConSol, today hosted its first annual program review meeting.

BIRA is one of six teams that comprise the US Department of Energy’s Building America program, a private/public partnership that provides energy solutions for production housing. The team is made up of national leaders in energy efficiency and renewable energy and includes builders and architects, manufacturers, utilities, researchers, lenders, and state and local government officials.

Exemplifying the mission of BIRA, several production home builders who received design and construction assistance from BIRA updated the group on their zero energy home building communities. These builders combine innovative construction and energy-efficient appliances with renewable energy to create homes that are energy-efficient, produce their own electricity, and are affordable. Linda Schiefflin, director of purchasing for Palo Alto-based Clarum Homes presented a status report of the four prototype homes her company is currently constructing in Borrego Springs, California, designed to save 90 percent on cooling energy in the hot, dry climate prevalent in the southwest. John Stewart, principal, and John Ralston, vice president of sales and marketing, for Premier Homes discussed their Premier Gardens and Premier Oaks communities in Sacramento and Roseville, which were designed to save homeowners up to 60 percent on utility costs.

Additionally, the group heard presentations from representatives of roof integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) systems; insulation manufacturers; heating, ventilating, and air conditioning manufacturers; tankless water heating manufacturers; window manufacturers; and lighting research and design consultants. “Partnerships between industry and government like BIRA are crucial to providing energy solutions so urgently needed in today’s world,” said Rob Hammon, Ph.D., principal of ConSol, and BIRA team leader.

ConSol has been providing energy solutions and visionary leadership for production builders since 1981.
