Newt Gingrich Cites Findings from ConSol Study

Appear in: ConSol Press Release - October 2005

BEVERLY HILLS, CA—(October 25, 2005)—The former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich, a well-known proponent of energy efficient building practices, today spoke to a group of approximately 200 civic, business, and political leaders at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event was hosted by Rinnai Corporation, the largest gas appliance manufacturer in the world and featured a discussion by Speaker Gingrich about ways the U.S. can decrease its dependence on foreign sources of energy. During his speech, Gingrich announced the findings of a study conducted by Stockton-based ConSol, which details current methods California’s building industry can use to construct more energy efficient homes and buildings.

The study, titled “Energy Conservation for California Builders” offered numerous recommendations for builders to consider adopting, including the following:

  • Reduce the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system duct leakage by mechanically fastening all connections with UV-resistant zip ties and sealing all duct connections with an approved tape or sealant
  • Install tankless water heating units in place of storage tank water heaters
  • Install a radiant barrier on attic surfaces to reflect heat before it can collect in the attic
  • Apply external foam sheathing to homes
  • Upgrade installation methods, ensuring insulation is properly installed in ceilings and walls
“While this may not be the ultimate answer to an unstable energy market, it certainly “buys” time to find better, permanent, and renewable solutions to our energy constraints and may avoid short-term brownouts and blackouts,” said Rob Hammon, principal and lead consultant at ConSol. “The easiest path to stabilizing our precarious energy status is for builders and manufacturers to adopt aggressive, voluntary measures that they can control to reduce energy usage in their products, thereby avoiding mandated regulations,” he concluded.

ConSol has been providing energy solutions for production builders since 1981. Helping to increase builders’ profitability while reducing builders’ risk, ConSol provides energy code compliance, mechanical engineering, ComfortWise®, and consulting solutions for the residential production builder.
