California Solar Initiative
A partnership between ConSol, GE, and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has won a grant from the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) through the California Solar Initiative (CSI) program. The goal of this project is to field-test a new low-cost solar retrofit product being developed by GE. The PV product, which includes a home energy monitor (HEM) from GE, will be installed on six homes within SDG&E service territory to determine its feasibility and impacts in different markets. One of the homes will also be selected as a net-zero energy retrofit and will include a full suite of GE “smart” demand responsive (DR) appliances, a battery storage system and a variety of additional energy efficiency measures. Research will also be done on financing options (ideally identifying existing or potential options that combine financing for the PV system, the energy efficiency measures and the re-roof), energy savings, impacts on the utility grid and market surveys; the final goal will be to develop a business model for this product, using a residential re-roof as a trigger for this installation. This project will expand on our team’s ongoing research into zero peak and zero net-energy homes in the existing home market.
